Japanese class; Sunday class event report

On Sunday, March 2nd, 15 learners and 10 volunteers participated in an event. They went to the Yokohama City History Museum and the Otsuka-Saikachido Archaeological Site Park, located in Tsuzuki Ward.

First, they walked from the gathering place at the Center Kita Station to the Yokohama City History Museum. Divided into two groups, they visited the permanent exhibition and the special exhibition titled “Introduction to Buddhist Statues.”

At the permanent exhibition, while listening to an explanation from the guide, they viewed displays of pottery, stone tools, and other artifacts. They learned about the lives of the people of Yokohama from about 30,000 years ago to the Kofun period.

After viewing the exhibition, they went to the Otsuka-Saikachido Archaeological Site Park, located nearby. This park is the site where remains of a village from about 2,000 years ago were discovered. Visitors can see pit dwellings and elevated storage buildings. When they entered a pit dwelling, it felt cool and comfortable inside.

(The highest temperature on that day was 18°C, and it was hot outside.) According to the guide, the inside of the pit dwelling is cool in summer and warm in winter. Additionally, even during typhoons, there was little damage, and it was built very sturdily using ancient wisdom.

After viewing the ruins, they went to the Tsuzuki Folk House Park to see the hina decorations.

At this folk house park, hina dolls and hanging hina dolls from the Taisho to Showa periods were on display. The learners enjoyed taking pictures of the hina decorations.

Finally, since the weather was nice and warm, everyone had a picnic together. Although the cherry blossoms were still in bud, they were able to enjoy a wonderful time, feeling the arrival of spring.
